Breweries in the 828 will not only come together to begin a new recycling program, this will be the nation’s largest brewery recycling cooperative.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and American Recycling of Western North Carolina (WNC) announced a program called the Western North Carolina Brewery Recycling Cooperative. With a start date in the next few months, the new program will feature a new recycling drop-off site near Asheville. This will be an opportunity for the area’s 80-plus breweries to recycle industry wastes currently going to landfill.

Ron Moore, owner of American Recycling of WNC said in a press release, “This is a win-win for both the local breweries and American Recycling. We want to thank Sierra Nevada and all of the others that have helped to make this possible.”

Sierra Nevada was at the forefront of the effort, partnering with American Recycling and other local breweries to develop the program and to also collect matching funds for the construction of the drop-off site. Some of the other breweries taking part include Asheville Brewing Co., Bhramari Brewing Co., Buchi, Burial Beer Co., Catawba Brewing Co., Hi-Wire Brewing, New Belgium Brewing Co., Wicked Weed Brewing, and Zillicoah Beer Company.

Sierra Nevada’s Mills River Brewery achieved TRUE Platinum Zero Waste certification in 2016.
