YMCA Father/Daughter Dance

Reuter YMCA Creates Daddy/Daughter Dance Hall

dance2The YMCA Father/Daughter Dance has been a tradition for my daughter for half of her life. Granted, she’s only 8, but it’s become a big deal for the both of us. We’re not alone.

“We’ve seen dads take their daughters out to dinner first, buy them flowers and make it a really official ‘date night’,” says the YMCA’s Mary Ratcliffe. “We have one family with four daughters, and Dad dances with each one individually and as a group. Children from ages 3 to 14 have attended, and many families have made it an annual tradition.”

The gym at the Reuter Y in Biltmore Park will once again transform its gym into jumping dance spot Feb. 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The cost is $10 per family for Y members, and $20 per family for non-members (based on one adult per family). The night features a DJ spinning a playlist spinning Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. The dance floor really gets lit though, when MC Hammer or anything from the soundtrack of “Footloose” plays. It’s a great opportunity for a group of 40-something guys to teach their daughters about the best music ever made.

dance3“The Reuter Family YMCA hosts this event to give father figures and their daughters the chance to make special memories together,” Mary says. “We want to give families in our community a chance to slow down for an evening and connect with each other.” The fact that I dust off moves that’d make Kevin Bacon blush is a plus, since my daughter’s still young enough to not be mortified by me.

The evening also features roses for the laides, a photo booth, craft station, snacks and cake. You can sign up to to be part of the event at any area YMCA location.
