Xpand Fest Promotes Power Of Arts

Xpand Fest, a free festival along downtown Asheville’s South Slope June 10, is designed to free the limits of our creative minds.

Broadcast-Jenn-Ross-Photography-1100x733“We have curated a day with entertainment, education, and conversation that will bring diverse communities together to share in creativity and collaboration,” says Xpand Fest’s Johanna Hagarty. “We have more than 40 performing groups and 35 art and food vendors, and an engaging nonprofit arts arcade with games and activities for all ages.”

The roster of musical entertainment includes many Asheville favorites, such as The Broadcast, The Fritz, Laura Blackley and the Wildflowers, Supatight, and the Secret B Sides. An aerial arts rig will be set up in the middle of the festival footprint, so keep your eyes to the skies. Along with three stages, and a buskers platform you’ll find performers roving through the festival. You can even meet a rehabilitated reptile, and play games focused on composting and gardening. Organizers want to highlight the power of the arts to improve our community.

“We are attempting to reach a wide breadth of people across sectors to provide opportunities for authentic communication and action,” Johanna explains. “We believe that utilizing the arts to talk about the challenges our community faces can yield big results.”

“Bhramari believes that there has always been a watering hole, from the taverns of yore to taprooms today, to trade ideas and debate beliefs over a pint. Sharing the same sudsy experience connects people to others when society has a funny way of keeping us apart. Both Bhramari and Xpand Fest know that change happens when we come together to share all of our unique skill sets and find a common ground so that we can then build a sustainable future upon it.”

You can get a first taste of Xpand FestivALE at a special Asheville Beer Week event June 1. From 5 to 8 pm that evening, Bhramari will be serving it up. Stop by for a taste, and learn more about Xpand Fest.
