Courses Teach Fundamentals Of Beer Character

A-B Tech is giving you a chance to know your beer a little better. The college’s Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast will be offering classes on malt and hops in brewing on Tuesday evenings this summer. The courses will be from 5:30 to 8:30 each week at A-B Tech’s Enka Campus.

Exploration of Malt in Brewing will explain how malting techniques affect the flavors produced in beer. Students will brew small batches of wort on the CBI™ pilot systems, gaining understanding of the science of brewing and flavor components associated with malt character. The class runs from June 13 through July 11, with no class on July 4.

Exploration of Hops in Brewing will cover how hops affect the flavors produced in beer. This series also includes a small batch brew, which will student hop character components. It runs from July 25 through August 15.

Students must be able to work in a physically demanding environment, including but not limited to standing in a hot, wet work area for extended time, climbing stairs, repeatedly lifting equipment and product weighing up to 55 pounds. Students also have to be at least 21. You can register in person at A-B Tech’s Asheville Campus or at A-B Tech Madison. Total fees are $106.35.
